Memorial Day 2011
One of my best friends is a war widow...every day is Memorial Day for her. My husband is a combat veteran who watched his friends return to a different homecoming...every day is Memorial Day for him. I have met an amazing mother who works so hard to carry out the legacy and sacrifice of her son and his brothers...every day is Memorial Day for her. I met a mother at a conference in January, she cared for her son for over a year when he returned from war seriously injured and eventually passed away...every day is Memorial Day for her. I know many Soldiers who wonder why they came home and their brothers or sisters did not return to the same fanfare...everyday is Memorial Day for them.
My point this Memorial Day is that for so many it is not a one day event. And for many they don't even pause on the day that is set aside to remember. I try to do my small part in honoring those who have sacrificed every single day...I try to teach my children always about the legacy of Freedom.
We may not all be able to pay the debt for our Freedom but we can do our part in honoring those who have.
Ronald Reagan said it best in this quote ""Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."
