I'm Sad

I wandered into the kitchen earlier and found Daniel standing with the fridge open. Normally, I would get on him about keeping it open but I saw the look on his face...

I asked him what was wrong.

"I'm sad," he said.

My heart skips a beat, "Why are you sad?"

"Daddy is leaving, it makes me sad."

I nod, not trusting my voice. After a deep breath, I say "but remember he came home after the last time he went?"

He nods and looks at me with eyes that are begging me for promises I can't make him.

I hug him and think of the best response I can...

"You want a snow cone?"

Oh that makes me cry! Deployments never get easier. In fact I think they possibly get harder each time. I know you have plenty of friends, but once we get to Hood, I hope I can be there for you and your boys if you need someone.

There is nothing that could have fixed that moment better than a snow cone. I wish we could have the magic answers to shield our children from every pain. You are such a good mom.
